END TIMES GLOSSARY

Here are explanations and definitions of some of the important topics regarding prophecy and the End Times:

Apocalypse:  The vision recorded by the Apostle John in the book of Revelation -- which describes the End Time events leading to the return of Jesus.

Apostasy:  The abandonment or renunciation of religious beliefs, often associated with a period of widespread spiritual decline in End Times.

Antichrist:  An evil figure, possessed by Satan, who is prophesied to rule over the entire world in the days before the Second Coming of Christ.

Armageddon:  A climactic battle between good and evil at the end of the world, as described in Revelation 16:16.

Beasts:  Symbolic figures usually representing the various governments or kingdoms that will rule over the earth during various times in history.

Dispensationalism:  A theological framework that divides history into distinct periods or "dispensations" in interpreting End Times events.  Includes the belief that there is a distinct plan for Israel and the Church, and that the promises made to Israel in the Old Testament will be literally fulfilled.

Eschatology:  The branch of theology dealing with the final events of human history.

False Prophet:  A second evil figure, along with the Antichrist, who causes the whole world to worship the Antichrist, and forces everyone to receive a mark on their forehead or right hand in order to buy or sell.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse:  Four symbolic horsemen usually described as causing conquest, war, famine, and death, found in the first four Seal Judgments of Revelation 6.

Gog and Magog:   Nations or group of nations prophesied to oppose God's people in the End Times.

Great White Throne Judgment:   The final judgment by God in which Books are opened -- containing the records of everyone’s deeds -- whether good or evil -- and when God will reward or punish each one accordingly.

Millennium:  A thousand-year period of peace and righteousness following the Tribulation.-- when Christ will rule the world.

Parousia:  The Greek term for the Second Coming of Christ, which is made up of a series of events.

Preterism:  A theological view that many End Times prophecies were fulfilled in the past, rather than being future events.

Rapture:  The prophesied event (1 Thess 4:16-17; 1 Cor. 15: 51-52) -- when true believers will be taken to heaven by God in a "twinkling of an eye".

Resurrection: The raising of the dead, a key element of many End Times scenarios.

Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls:  Three series of seven judgments and calamities described in the Book of Revelation.

Second Coming:  The return of Jesus Christ to Earth.

Tribulation:  A period of intense suffering and turmoil prophesied to occur before the Second Coming of Christ.
